Educate Yourself About Oral Emergencies

Posted .

Although most individuals think cavities and dental erosion pose the biggest risks to your smile, the truth is that they are progressive and slowly wear down your teeth over time. One of the most severe forms of damage that your smile can receive is through an oral accident or injury due to a blunt trauma blow or another similar emergency.  If you ever suffer from an oral accident and treatment is immediately required, it’s always a good idea to know what to do in advance rather than just guessing. This can be the difference between saving a tooth or losing it forever.

In situations where you may have lost a tooth, it is important to apply the necessary care to ensure that your mouth can continue to thrive. If a tooth is knocked out, try to find the pieces of tooth and put them into a liquid solution. It may be possible to later have the tooth reinserted into place. The tooth can be soaked in milk, water with a dash of table salt, or a cell growth medium such as Save-a-Tooth. If done correctly, it may be possible for the tooth to be later reinserted by your dentist. Your best chance of success occurs if you visit your dentist within 1 hour of the tooth being knocked out.

If you ever have any situations that arise with an object stuck between your teeth, never use any abrasive tools or sharp instruments. If you are not careful, you can end up causing further damage to your mouth that end up slicing open your gums or cutting up the surfaces of your teeth. To prevent further dental damage from arising, use nonabrasive tools such as dental floss to gently try to dislodge the objects from your mouth. If you need additional help, visit your dentist.
