There are different options for replacing missing teeth. Dentures and bridges serve many people well, but some patients opt for dental implants.

While dental implants are effective and popular, there are some things that you should consider before moving ahead. You should have a discussion with our dentist, Dr. Michael Ling to find out if implants are a good choice for you, or if you should pursue other restoration options.

With implants, the replacement teeth are attached to titanium posts that are placed directly into your jaw. So, surgery is required; along with recovery time and the time that is needed to for the jawbone to grow around the post itself. If you suffer from hemophilia or have immune system issues, the doctor may suggest another course of treatment.

Your gums and jaws need to be healthy for the implants to work well. If you do not have enough bone in your jaw to support the implant, this can be corrected by rebuilding the jawbone.

If you are pregnant, of if your jaws have not finished growing, implants may not be for you. If you are a heavy smoker, abuse drugs or cannot make a commitment to take care of your teeth, especially your implants, another restoration treatment may be in order.

You should also discuss any diseases you have and any medications you take with your dentist, since some may not be conducive to dental implants.
